Jack Johnson Retiered...

Today was the last day of Jack, Iteris Inc. CEO, after 30 years of successful service. I know jack since 2 years ago. We talked in a few occasions and from the first talk I liked him. Heseemed to be an intelligent person with an optimistic mind; and he is.

I approched him to say fairwell today after a ceremoney held in the Skylight Cafe. He rememebred me and said that from my face he can say that I am a good guy. well, that I hope! Then I asked him what the secret was to his success? and he gave me a very valueble advice:

"to be optimistic all the time. Look at the future, forget about the past and let bygones be bygones.Try to hold together the group and think about the company before thinking about yourself and do what's best for the company first."

THE TRUTH BEHIND '300'

For many Iranians the cinematic movie '300' may come as a shocking
revelation. But to those of us who came up through America's school
system, the 'Battle of Thermopylae,' which is what the movie '300' is
based on, is as familiar as George Washington's fabled "cherry tree"
incident.

The Battle of Thermopylae was of course written by the classical Greek
author, Herodotus, who lived in the Persian city of Halicarnassus. His
book, 'The Histories' became part of Western folklore only recently. It
wasn't until about 1850 that America embraced Herodotus as the leading
authority on Persian history.

Before 1850, however, the West had a very favorable impression of the
Persian Empire. That's because the West's main source for Persian
history was the Bible and the 'Cyropaedia,' written by another Greek
author named Xenophon.

But the Cyropaedia glorified the monarchy of Cyrus The Great, and in the
wake of two bloody revolutions fought by America and France to liberate
themselves from their own monarchies, a major campaign began, around the
mid 19th century, to promote democracy throughout the rest of Europe,
and Herodotus was the perfect propaganda tool.

Herodotus was a democratic groupie and was quickly ushered in as the
"Father Of History." Around 1850, his 'Battle Of Thermopylae' came to
symbolize the West's struggle for democracy against the powerful forces
of Persia's monarchy.

The story is easy to buy into: 300 brave Spartans saved Western
democracy from 2.7 million evil Persians. But aside from the fanciful
numbers which need decimal-point adjustments, this whimsical tale has
far graver consequences than a mere bias account of history.

The 'Battle Of Thermopylae' has been the single most powerful wedge,
which has divided East and West for over 2 millennia. In a time when
East and West should be reconciling their differences, along comes the
movie '300' to drive that wedge even deeper.

What is most disturbing about this movie is not that it lacks historical
accuracy. It is not that Xerxes, the Grandson of Cyrus The Great and
loving husband of Esther, is shown as an oversized drag queen. Its not
even the outdated racist cliché of casting the Persians as Africans and
the Spartans as white, blue-eyed Chippendale dancers, when in reality
the roles may well have been reversed.

What is so distressing about this movie is the realization of the
tremendous power Hollywood wields in determining a people's identity.
It is the same nightmare Native Americans endured during the whole
'cowboy-movie' genre.

But for those who are quick to dismiss '300' as a fleeting fantasy flick
aimed at the insignificant, 17 to 24 year-old male video-gamer, think
again. First there was Alexander, now '300,' next could well be the
'Battle Of Marathon,' another one of Herodotus's glowing accounts of
ancient Persia.

Herodotus is accepted blindly by virtually all Western demographics.
Even the New York Times is not immune. Here is how it described the
Persians in its April 20, 2004 issue on the Battle Of Marathon:

"the defeat of a ruthless state (Persia) that had enslaved much of the
known world from the Balkans to the Himalayas."

Europe in what scholars call one of the first great victories of freedom
over tyranny"

What stretches the limits of hypocrisy is that there isn't a single
shred of archeological evidence that the Persians ever owned slaves.
Yet we know that slavery was an integral cornerstone of Greek society.
Aristotle's manifesto even sanctions it. Persia, which was once a haven
for runaway slaves from Egypt, Greece, and later Rome, is today branded
as a slave-hungry empire by cultures which were built on slavery!

What makes Herodotus's propaganda so difficult to refute is that its
peppered with facts. But in reality, its a desperate diatribe. Perhaps
his biggest ploy is his attempt to equate democracy with freedom. These
two words are used virtually interchangeably throughout his book. And
the West has swallowed it hook-line-and-sinker.

But America's founding fathers new better. They were not swayed by
Herodotus. They implemented many safeguards to protect freedom from the
pitfalls that mired Athenian democracy. Even Winston Churchill said,
"Democracy is the worst form of government except for all the others
which have been tried."

Democracy may well be the best form of government. But what makes
America great is not so much democracy as it is its Bill Of Rights. And
this is exactly what made Persia Great. Democracy can often lead to
tyranny by the majority as was the case in democratic Athens, where
women, slaves and foreigners did not have the right to vote.

In monarchic Persia, however, women enjoyed a level of gender equality
unmatched even to this day, and slavery was not practiced. The fact is,
Persia's monarchy was more free than Athens' democracy, all because of
Persia's Bill Of Rights.

No one exemplifies Persia's freedom better than Herodotus himself. He
describes Athens as the bastion of freedom, yet he chose to live in
Persia. Xenophon, on the other hand, who actually lived in Athens,
reminisces enviably about the monarchy of Cyrus The Great?

Herodotus claims Persia had enslaved most of the known world, yet we
know Herodotus was not a slave. He traveled freely throughout the
empire, openly criticizing it.

Why did Herodotus not live in Greece? Because Persia - the empire he is
so quick to demonize - afforded him the very freedom to publish his
scathing report of it. People want to live where their god-given rights
are protected, regardless of whether its democratic or monarchic.

These god-given rights were first drafted into law by the founder of the
Persian empire, Cyrus The Great. In fact, ancient Persia may well have
served as the blue print for America's Bill Of Rights. Both Thomas
Jefferson and James Madison, the architects of America's Constitution,
were great admirers and owned several copies of Xenophon's Cyropaedia.

Today, no other country resembles ancient Persia as closely as does the
United States. If any country should sympathize with, rather than
celebrate, Persia's quagmire in Greece it is the United States. Few
events in history mirror America's war on terror as closely as Persia's
war on Greece.

The Greeks had been carrying out terrorist attacks on Persian holdings
for years. They had attacked Persian cities, set fire to Persian
temples, disrupted key trade routes, and pirated merchant ships crossing
the Bosphorus. They incited rebellions inside Persian provinces, but
perhaps most abhorrent to the Persians was the ease by which the Greeks
broke their treaties and betrayed Persia's trust.

Rather than resort to violence, however, Persia tried to keep the Greeks
in check by financially supporting Greek politicians who were
"pro-Persian," much the same way America fights its proxy wars. But
what finally triggered Persia's wrath was an act rarely mentioned in the
West, though well documented, even by Herodotus (7:11).

Persia's 9/11:

In 498 BCE, Athens carried out a terrorist attack on Sardis, a major
Persian city, which made 9/11 seem like child's play. Aristagoras, an
Athenian, set fire to the "outlying parts" of Sardis trapping most of
its population "in a ring of fire." (Herodotus 5:101)

More innocent civilians died at the hands of Aristagoras than Osama bin
Laden could ever hope to kill. And just as most of the world supported
America's retaliation against Al Qaeda, so did it rally in support of
Persia's attack on Athens.

The Spartans were not even targets of Persia's attack, until they
violated a universal protocol by killing a Persian messenger who
Herodotus claims was asking for Sparta's submission but in reality was
probably sent by Persia's king, Xerxes to convey the same message George
Bush sent to the entire world after 9/11: "you're either with us, or
against us."

The Spartans were Greek Jihadists who lived only to die. They were by
all accounts ruthless savages who murdered Greek slaves known as
"Helots" just for sport, cultivated a culture of thievery and rape, and
practiced infanticide, as the movie '300' rightly points out in its
opening scenes. Sparta was not even democratic. It was an oligarchy at
best. Despite knowing all this, the West continues to hail the Spartans
as the saviors of Western democracy.

Yes, the Spartans died fighting a foreign invader. But so do countless
Iraqi insurgents, yet few of us would consider them good guys. Those
who do are then not much different from Westerners who cheer for the
Spartans. Rooting for the Spartans merely because they were underdogs,
is like rooting for Osama bin Laden today.

History is no longer written by the victors, it is written by
filmmakers. When will the children of Persia rise up and fight back
using the same weapon Hollywood has used for years to denigrate the
legacy of their ancestors? When will we abandon our defensive posture
and begin to write our own history again?

Perhaps the movie '300' was a necessary wake up call. But Persia
bashing will never disappear on its own. It is the main villain in the
Western saga. The only way it will change is through the power of film.

Alex Jovy's epic movie about Cyrus The Great could have done wonders for
the Iranian image. Instead it sits idle for lack of money. My

languished for the mere want of $400,000.

Iranians are the most affluent minority group in America. If we set our
minds to it, we can achieve anything. This Nowruz, I hope all Iranians
will resolve to finally unite in an effort to redeem the reputation of
our ancestors.

Another Propaganda Against Perisian Cluture: 300!

باز در وبلاگستان غوغایی دیگر به راه افتاده است ، و این بار موضوع بر سر فیلم 300 است ، فیلمی که گویا از فردا - 9 مارس 2007- در سینماها اکران خواهد شد. داستان فیلم درباره نبرد سپاه خشایارشاه در ترموپیل و مقاومت یک لشگر 300 نفره در برابر سپاه ایران است. اما چیزی که باعث برانگیخته شدن احساسات ایرانیان بعد از دیدن این فیلم خواهد شد ، چهره زشت و غلطی است که از ایرانیان ارائه می‌شود ، چه در بعد ظاهری و چه از لحاظ منش و شیوه رفتار آنها.

نمی‌خواهم پستم را از سر تعصب بنویسم ، ولی واقعا شما فکر می‌کنید ، چنین تصویرسازی‌ای از خشایارشاه درست است؟!

آیا محققین این فیلم در مورد لباس ایرانیان در عهد باستان تحقیق علمی کرده‌اند ، به گواه همگان لباس ایرانیان باستان از لحاظ آراستگی و زیبایی در دنیای قدیم همتایی نداشته است ، چنانکه لباس ایرانی هدیه‌ای بسیار با ارزش در آن زمان محسوب می‌شد.

لباس ایرانیان باستان:بطور كلي لباس ایرانیان باستان عبارت بود از يك بالا پوش شبيه شنل و يك دامن پرچين ، كه بالا پوش و دامن در محل كمر داراي يك كمربند چرمي بوده است. بالا پوش پوششي مانند شنل بوده است در بعضي جلوي آن باز و در بعضي بسته بوده است. بلندي بالا پوش به اندازه بالا تنه است.در قسمت كمر به شكل ليفه تمام چينهاي پشت بالا پوش جلو باز روي چال گردن بوسيله دكمه‌اي به هم وصل مي شود. دامن ایرانیان بر دو نوع است: نوع اول يك راسته چين و دومي داراي دوراسته چين.
ایرانیان لباس خودرا ازپارچه هاي نقش و نگاردار با رنگهاي گيرا و پرشكوه تهيه مي‌كرده‌اند. كلاه ایرانی از جنس نَمد بوده است.(مگر كلاه هاي جنگي كه از آهن و مُفرُغ ساخته مي شده است.)

300 محصول سال 2007 و اقتباسی از رمان تصویری 300 است. این رمان تصویری به وسیله فرانک میلر نوشته است ، رمان درباره نبرد ترموپیل است.

فرانک میلر کیست؟
فرانک میلر متولد سال 1957 ، یک نویسنده ، بازیگر و کارگردان آمریکایی است و بیشتر به واسطه کمیک‌استریپ‌هایش شناخته شده است. یکی از معروف‌ترین کمیک‌استریپ‌های وی «شهر گناه» یا sin city است که بعدها فیلم مشهور شهر گناه از روی آن ساخته شد.

آیا 300 تنها فیلمی است که درباره نبرد ترموپیل ساخته شده است؟
خیر ، پیش از این در سال 1962 ، فیلم دیگری درباره نبرد ترموپیل ساخته شده است ، عنوان این فیلم 300 اسپارتی یا The 300 Spartans است ، کارگردان این فیلم رودولف میت بود. جالب است بدانید همین فیلم الهام‌بخش میلر در نوشتن و طراحی کمیک‌استریپ‌اش بوده است.

کارگردان فیلم کیست؟
کارگردان فیلم زاک اسنایدر Zack Snyder نام دارد ، وی 40 سال بیشتر سن ندارد و در کارنامه‌اش فیلم چندان مهمی دیده نمی‌شود.

خلاصه داستان فیلم:

300 به صورت ناقص و شاید بهتر باشد بگوییم بی‌ربط نبرد ترمویپل را روایت می‌کند : شاه لئونیداس بهمراه 300 اسپارتی ، در برابر ارتش میلیونی خشایارشاه ایستادگی می‌کند ، وگرچه نهایتا کشته می‌شود ولی پیکارش باعث اتحاد یونانی‌ها در برابر ایرانیان می‌شود.

داستان تولید فیلم 300 :در می 2003 تولید فیلم 300 با تهیه پیش‌نویس 121 صفحه‌ای آن آغاز شد ، در ژوئن 2004 ، زاک اسنایدر برای کارگردانی فیلم استخدام شد و سپس فرانک میلر به عنوان مشاور به تیم دست‌اندر کار پروژه پیوست. مانند فیلم «شهر گناه» ، فیلم 300 ، اقتباسی کامل و صحنه به صحنه از کمیک استریپ فرانک میلر است. البته این موضوع استثنائاتی هم دارد ، برای افزودن به جذابیت‌های فیلم ، اسنایدر شخصیت ملکه «گورگو» را به فیلم اضافه کرد ، کاراکتر زنی که از شوهرش ، شاه لئونیداس حمایت می‌کند. مورد دیگر اضافه شدن نریشن به فیلم است. دو ماه طول کشید تا نیزه‌ها ، سپرها و لباس‌ها و شمشیرهای مورد نیاز ساخته شود ، البته در مواردی از وسایل فیلم‌های تروی و الکساندر ، هم استفاده شد. در همین دو ماه تیم انیمیشن فیلم ، سرگرم ساختن یک گرگ و 13 اسب دیجیتال شدند. در 17 اکتبر 2005 ، فیلم وارد مرحله تولید فعال خود در مونترال شد ، فیلم‌برداری فیلم 60 روز طول کشید. بودجه 60 میلیون دلاری فیلم را کمپانی برادران وارنر تأمین کرد.

جالب است بدانید تقریبا تمام صحنه‌های این فیلم در داخل استودیو و به وسیله تکنیکی به نام digital backlot فیلم‌برداری شد ، یعنی در تمام مدت بازیگران در برابر پرده‌های آبی نقش بازی می‌کردند و بعد صحنه‌های پشت زمینه اضافه می‌شد:

بعد از فیلم برداری ، فیلم مورد ویرایش دیجیتالی قرار گرفت و تقریبا 250 جلوه ویژه به آن اضافه شد ، 70 هنرمند انیماتور در این مرحله با پروژه فیلم همکاری می‌کردند.

تاریخ یا افسانه؟
داریوش بزرگ پس از 36 سال سلطنت در دی ماه 486 پیش از مبلاد درگذشت و جایش را به پسر 35 ساله‌اش خشایارشا یا خشیارشا (خشئی ارشه) داد که مادرش آتوسا ، دختر کوروش بزرگ بود. خشایارشا شاهزاده‌ای تحصیل‌کرده ، خوش‌اندام و زیباروی بود. ابهتی که کوروش و داریوش برای دستگاه سلطنت ایران به وجود آورده بودند ، خشایارشا را نیز در نظر ایرانیان و اقوام زیر سلطه در همان شکوه کوروش و داریوش قرار داد.
دوران داریوش و خشایارشا ، دوران آغازین شکوفایی تمدن یونان بود و یونانیان نیز می‌رفتند که جایگاه خودشان را در تمدن جهانی مشخص سازند. شماری از نویسندگان یونانی در دهه‌های بعد از داریوش و خشایارشا در جستجوی راهی برای ایجاد یک هویت ویژه برای اقوام یونانی داستان‌های حماسی مقاومت یونان در برابر ایران عهد داریوش و خشایارشا را ساختند و نشر دادند ، این نوشته‌ها بعدها برای یونانیان ماند تا گواه عظمتی برای آتن و و یونان آن روزگار باشد و یونانیان و غربیان بتوانند بگویند که اگر ایران «بوده است» ، ما هم «بوده ایم».

داستان‌هایی که یونانیان آن زمان درباره بودن خودشان ساختند ، هر چه بود ، شنیدنش برای یونانی‌ها دلکش بود. نویسندگان غربی نیز که مثل یونانیان آن روزگاران علاقه دارند ، که یونان را محور تمدن بشری معرفی کنند ، این داستان‌ها را با شاخ و بال بسیار زیادی در کتاب‌های تاریخی می نویسند و برای اثبات آنها دلیل و شاهد عقلی می‌تراشند.

نکته جالبی که در بسیاری از نوشته‌های این مورخان غربی به چشم می‌خورد این است که گویا با استواری آتن در برابر ایران تمدن غربی نجات یافت. مانند اینکه دولت دولت هخامنشی با تمدن بشری در ستیز بود و چون نتوانست با آتن کاری بکند ، تمدن آتنی از تخریب رهید تا برای بشریت باقی بماند. و از این جالبتر آنکه می‌بینیم عموم مورخین غربی قرن ما دولت هخامنشی را می‌ستایند و اعتراف دارند که دولت ایران از تمدن بشری پاسداری کرد و فرهنگ خاورمیانه‌ای در دوران هخامنشی متحول گردید و به اوج ارتقا رسید ، ولی وقتی به یاد یونان می‌افتند به یکباره سخنانشان عوض می‌شود. این دولت پاسدار تمدن بشری ، چه خطری برای تمدن یونانی داشت ، موضوعی است که باید از این خودشیفتگان پرسید و پاسخش را نزد خود آنها یافت.

در سال 480 پیش از میلاد ، خشایارشا به یونان لشکر کشید ، داستان لشکرکشی خشایارشا را داستان‌پردازان یونانی چنان پرداخته‌اند که گویا خشایارشا تمام آسیا را بر ضد شهر آتن بسیج کرده بوده است. هرودوت برای انکه بنمایاند که آتن خیلی اهمیت و ابهت داسته ، این داستان را در کتاب هفتم تاریخش به تفصیل شگفت‌آور و دل‌انگیزی به رشته نتحریر درآورده است. او بندهای 305 و 310 کتابش را به آمار سپاهیان ایران اختصاص داده و می‌نویسد که شمار ناوهای خشایارشا در این جنگ افزون بر 5200 فروند بوده و افراد نیروی دریایی‌اش از 517 هزار نفر بیشتر بودند ، کل تعداد جنگندگان خشایارشا از نیروی زمینی و دریایی که در داستان دلکش هرودوت به جنگ آتن بسیج شده بودند بالغ بر 2 میلیون و 317 هزار نفر بود ، که یک میلیون و هفتصد هزار نفرشان افراد پیاده‌نظام بودند.

هرودوت آنقدر در فکر بزرگ جلوه دادن لشکرکشی خشایارشا و اهمیت تراشیدن برای نیروی آتن بوده که با وجود آنکه مردی با تجربه و دقیق بوده ، فراموش کرده بوده که فکر کند چنین انبوهی از انسان‌ها چگونه قادر بوده خواربار مورد نیازش را در سرزمین کوچکی چون کرانه‌های دریای ایژه و غرب آسیای صغیر تأمین کند.

نبرد ترموپیل و تصرف آتن
به ابتکار خشایارشا پلی از قایق بر روی بغاز داردانل ساختند که نیروی زمینی ایران توانست از روی آن عبور کرده و وارد خاک یونان شود. در ابتدا خشایارشاه با پادشاه کارتاژ(Carthage)صلح کرد تا وی یونانیان را همراهی نکند. علاوه بر این، تعداد زیادی از یونانیان به ارتش خشایارشاه پیوستند از جمله مردم منطقه تسالی(Thessaly) اما در همین هنگام طوفانی سهمگین وزید و به کشتی‌های ایران خسارت وارد کرد. سرانجام در دریای آرتمزیوم(Artemisium) بین کشتی‌های دو سپاه جنگ درگرفت و یونان شکست خوردند. نبرد دیگر در تنگه ترموپیل(Thermopylae) در گرفت که به علت تنگی جا نیروی ایران با مقاومت آتنی‌ها و اسپارتی‌ها که برای نخستین بار باهم متحد شده بودند مواجه شد. سرانجام یک یونانی به ایرانیان که در آستانه شکست بودند راهی را معرفی کرد که به پشت تنگه می‌رفت. یونانیان با آگاهی از این خیانت گریختند و فقط لئونیداس(Leonidas)(حاکم اسپارت) بهمراه سیصد اسپارتی برجای ماندند و همگی کشته شدند. سپاه ایران بعد از این جنگ آتن را به تصرف درآورد و کاخ آکروپولیس در زمان جنگ نابود شد ولی معبد آکروپولیس و خانه های شهر به دستور خشایارشاه به سربازانش سالم ماند.

آنچه 300 و فیلم‌های مشابه نمی‌گویند و یا نمی‌خواهند که بگویند:- وضعیت ظاهر و خوی منش ایرانیان
- قدرت فرماندهی و راهبری نظامی فرماندهان
- صلح‌طلب بودن ایرانیان و پرهیز انها از غارت و تخریب و کشتار در سرزمین‌های تحت سلطه

با فیلم 300 چه می‌توانیم بکنیم؟به گمان من سینما از چنان قدرتی برخوردار است که می‌تواند خواسته یا ناخواسته روی افکار عمومی اثر بگذارد ، فیلم 300 هم از این قاعده مستثنی نیست و خوش‌خیالی است اگر گمام کنیم چنین فیلم پرهزینه و دراماتیکی با انبوه جلوه‌های ویژه‌اش نتواند ، نظر غربیان را درباره پیشینه ما عوض کند.

مادامی که به صورت فعال و گاه عامدانه از خود چهره‌ای سیاه برای رسانه‌های غربی درست می‌کنیم ، و تا زمانی که از گذشته خود غافل هستیم ، نباید بهتر از این را انتظار داشته باشیم. بارها نوشته‌ام که فرهنگ هم دیجیتالی شده است ، وقتی برای نوشتن این پست نبرد ترموپیل و خشایارشا را در در گوگل جستجو می کردم ، متوجه شدم ، حتی یک سایت خوب درباره تاریخ باستان نداریم. هرچه بود تلاش‌های پراکنده افرادی معدود و پست‌های پراکنده وبلاگ‌نویس‌ها بود.

از ساختن فیلم و گیم هم نگویید که نه توان ساختن آنها را داریم و نه اراده‌ای برای تجلیل از گذشته خود.
